These are a few things that came my way on Sunday (yesterday) and today, apart from a lot other similar remarks. Reason : I got selected for Summer Internship in HLL.
Well, I apppeared for interviews in both HLL and ITC - on Saturday. And results were out in the evening. Lets talk about both one by one.
HLL:
Hindustan Lever Limited, a part of Unilever. My first Interview. Oh, I will cherish this moment forever. I performed well in the GD (partly because of earlier experience in ITC GD and partly because of the wonderful group I got). My group included apart from me - Krishna Khandelwal, Shivangi lal, Rahul Kanodia, Akshay Jain, Harvinder Singh, Amarendra and ______. I initiated the GD and sort of commanded it. It was again me who controlled the discussion when it started becoming a fish market. Shivangi gave the conclusion. The judges said that the GD was good though our choices were quite different from those of other groups.
Except Amarendra and Krishna, we all were selected for Interviews. I was called first - may be that means I got the highest marks !!
I went in and lo! The interviewers were the judges of GD. I wished them morning but I doubt they would have heard it. Anyway they noticed the wishing nod of my head. After I sat down, I was asked to tell something about myself. Though I had always thought I would go to an interview prepared with answers to all common questions, but I didn't. So I started and with the first sentence I spoke, I remembered reading somewhere - don't go personal. I also had heard that first few questions were meant to ease your tension. But that was not what happened to me. I was straightaway asked "What is your favourite subject?".
"Fluid Mechanics", I replied.
"And that is also the elective for your project. "
And so for the next 10 minutes, I was answering questions related to my project and Fluid Mechanics - both of which I do not know as much as some of my classmates. But I tried my best and answered with all of my mind focussed. Finally they were (sort of) convinced and moved to the other project I had mentioned - Implementation of LUDO strategy through JAVA. While answering the questions, I tried to slip in that I did that with two other partners so as to create an impression of team work, but I think they were more concerned with what I did.
Finally they asked me why did I choose CHEMICAL ENGINEERING and not Information Technology, as I had Maths and Computer Science as my electives. Even as I think now I could not have given a better answer that I did then.
At the end, as I expected (seriously), they asked me if I had any questions. I was again not prepared. But I asked them about facing, in the intern, concepts not taught to me. They replied casually that you have people to help you out.
"Thank you, Sir", and I was shaking hands with the people who had taken my first interview.
Later I was called back and was informed by the same guys that I fared well in my interview and "we hope to meet you". I thanked them almost twice and came out. I was so happy that I would have started singing loudly had I not seen Pratyush Lal along with some other seniors and some of my batchmates. I told them what happened very briefly and went back to my room.
In the evening, there was the list of selected students:
Mayank Pandey
Harvinder Singh
Shivangi Lal
Arnika Choudhary
From ME, Kale-Isha-Dimri got selected.
ITC:
This is a company which caused some ethical concerns about itself during PPT. It did not occured to me that working in a Tobacco company can be related to ethics also till Manjesh talked to me in such a bad tone that I have to admit anyone even slightly in doubt would have been convinced with him - but I didnot.
It was the first GD I ever faced (except one in COM200, which was really nothing). So, had almost no idea what to do. But the presence of Ankit Jain and Shaheen Shah was remarkable. They carried it well and I sort of blended in with some of the good comments to my credit. Daksh, as I doubted, was not convinced till the end and one of the judges asked "Mayank, would you like to conclude?" That was my first conclusion in which I rejected Daksh's suggestions. As soon as it was over, I was running to SAC for HLL GD.
After the interview in HLL, with mood soring up, went to VH to check ITC results - I was in for interviews. The interview was delayed by an hour, but finally I was called in. The interviewers seemed sort of sarcastic from the beginning and one even said,"Oh nothing! I was just pulling your leg." If that was their idea of making me feel comfortable, it certainly didn't work. And it made me thinking that I have started messing it up. But after a few fumbles, I was back on track.
Towards the end of the interview they asked me the only thing I am sure I knew far more than any other applicant - "What do you know about ITC apart from that told in PPT". It was a dream come true. I told them everything mentioned in ITC's site and even mentioned a figure - ITC spent 6 billion dollars in last 5 years in Tobacco Sector alone.
Later in the evening, list was out and my name was not there, but it didnot matter any more. I was selected for HLL and that was enough.
I have received a lot of Congratulations till now - but one of my recently-gone-very-close friend has started behaving too much friendly to me. Vikas Sharma seems genuinely happy. My roomie is basically sad, as are many more, for not being shortlisted due to low CPI. Manjesh seems to behave normally. So, except for that one person, I do not have to worry so much as of now.
Its the time to enjoy.
